Rooftop & Balcony Turf

A Rooftop That Looks Like a Garden. Not a Service Platform

A downtown Austin rooftop with turf is a residents-pay-more-for-the-unit amenity. A rooftop with exposed membrane is a maintenance line item. The delta is a good install.

Short answer

Turf installs well on rooftops, balconies and terraces, and it is often the only practical way to get a green surface up there. The whole job hinges on drainage across a hard surface, because water can no longer soak down into a base and has to reach an existing drain instead.

We handle rooftop and balcony installs for Austin metro properties, both residential terraces and commercial amenity decks. Permits, HOA approvals and property management coordination are handled by us rather than left to you.

Why Rooftop Turf Works

What a Good Rooftop Install Does

Weight-Aware Base System

Rooftops have load limits. We spec a drainage-mat and lightweight base system that meets structural review without over-loading the deck.

Positive Drainage

Roof drains cannot be blocked. The drainage mat routes water to the existing scuppers and roof drains without pooling.

Wind Uplift Protection

On high-rise decks, wind uplift is a real concern. We anchor and edge for the specific wind zone and building height.

Rooftop-Specific Specs

What Goes Into a Rooftop Install

Drainage Mat

Purpose-made rooftop drainage mat sits between the membrane and the turf. It creates a positive drainage plane that keeps water moving to the roof drain.

Lightweight Base

No crushed granite on a rooftop. Base is either the drainage mat alone or a lightweight aggregate specified by the engineer of record.

Perimeter Anchoring

Edges are anchored to hardscape or existing parapet detail. No penetrations of the roof membrane unless the building requires it, in which case we coordinate with the roofing contractor.

Access and Coordination

We coordinate freight elevator access, off-hour install windows, HOA or property management approvals, and building insurance certs before we mobilize.

Recommended Blends

Blend Options for Rooftop and Balcony

Rooftop spec is driven by load capacity first, look second. Hill Country Blend is the balanced pick for most decks. Texas Supreme is heavy enough that it may exceed the load allowance on some rooftops, so confirm with the structural engineer before spec.

Our Process

How a Rooftop Install Goes

Walk-Through

On-site with property manager. Load review, drainage review, access review.

Engineered Spec and Quote

Drainage mat spec, weight calc, wind zone anchoring plan, written estimate.

Off-Hour Install

Scheduled around building operations. Freight elevator, insurance certs, night or weekend windows if required.

Handoff

Care instructions, warranty registered in property owner’s name.

Common Questions

What People Ask About Rooftop Balcony

Can artificial turf be installed on a rooftop?

Yes. It goes over the existing surface with a drainage layer or underlay so water can still reach the roof drains. The critical constraint is never blocking or slowing that drainage path, so we look at where water currently exits before quoting.

Will it damage the roof or waterproofing?

Not when it is installed as a floating system that does not penetrate the membrane. Turf on a roof should not be nailed down the way a yard install is. Where a roof is under warranty, we coordinate so the install does not compromise it.

How is it held down in wind?

On an exposed deck or high balcony, turf is secured at the perimeter and weighted with infill rather than relying on friction. Wind uplift on an unsecured edge is the main failure mode on rooftop installs.

How heavy is it?

Turf plus infill adds meaningful weight per square foot, which matters on a structure with load limits. On a commercial roof or an older balcony this is a question for the building’s structural information before the job is designed, not after.

Does rooftop turf get hotter than ground level?

Usually yes, because rooftops are unshaded and surrounded by reflective surfaces. Shade structures and lighter infill help. Treat an exposed roof deck as a morning and evening space in high summer.
